Equine foraging — the continuous, selective acquisition of plant material through grazing while moving, typically occupying fourteen to eighteen hours of a horse's day in conditions approximating evolutionary norms. Foraging integrates locomotion, olfaction, selective choice-making, digestive function, and reward-system activation into a single continuous activity. It is not a feeding strategy. It is a way of being in the world.

The horse's digestive system evolved around continuous low-level intake. The equine stomach produces acid continuously rather than only when food is present. The cecum and hindgut require a steady stream of forage to maintain their microbial populations and prevent fermentation imbalances. The jaw, the dental anatomy, and the salivary system are all organised around prolonged grinding rather than bolus consumption. Every part of the equine gut is built for a horse that is almost always eating — slowly, selectively, while walking.

But foraging is not only a digestive event. It is also a neurological one. The selection of foraging sites involves olfactory investigation, memory, and decision-making. The act of grazing activates the reward system — the continuous small reinforcements of finding, selecting, and consuming food keep the horse's brain in a sustained state of motivated, low-arousal engagement. Horses at pasture are not simply 'eating'. They are processing the world through their most sophisticated sensory systems while maintaining the kind of neurological state — calm, engaged, purposeful — that their welfare depends on.

When horses are managed on two or three hay feeds per day with no access to continuous forage, several things happen simultaneously. The stomach produces acid with nothing to buffer it, increasing gastric ulcer risk. The hindgut undergoes periods of reduced motility, increasing colic risk. The reward system, deprived of its primary continuous input, becomes dysregulated. And the horse that is hungry and bored and frustrated begins to develop the behavioural repertoire of a highly evolved foraging animal with nothing to forage: wood-chewing, crib-biting, stall-walking, and other stereotypies that are, in essence, the foraging system running without forage.
